While many methods of smoking and dabbing have been around for ages, including water pipes, hand pipes, rolled weed, and nectar collectors, there’s a new kid in town! Well, somewhat new… While vaping has been around for years now, it is the newest of all methods of cannabis consumption, and rises in popularity year-by-year. Vaping offers a level of pure convenience that no classic method can emulate.
Vaping is the process of converting a cannabis substance, whether it be oil, concentrate, or dry weed into a vapor full of cannabinoids and terpenes. Vaporizers come in many forms, from pocket-sized pens to sizable table-top contraptions. Each type is great in their own right, serving different purposes, and providing options for many types of consumers.
Modern vaping was born in 2003 when Chinese pharmacist and inventor Hon Lik created the first e-cigarette. This invention was born from the gradual realization of the serious health risks associated with cigarette smoking, as he himself was a heavy smoker. By 2007, the United States allowed the importation of e-cigarettes. After the nicotine vape was introduced, cannabis vaporization entered the ever-evolving market soon after.
Yup, not all vaporizers are made equal! There are three main types of vapes: Cartridge, concentrate, and dry herb. Cartridges (also known as carts) are pre-filled vessels with a half or full gram of cannabis oil. The most common type is 510-threaded carts. However, there are different variations that are compatible with specific types of vaporizers.
Lastly, and the most new and up-and-coming of the three is dry herb vapes. Dry herb vaporizers implement a convection or conduction heating chamber that holds ground herb, which is heated to the appropriate temperature to release potent vapor. As dry weed is vaporized, rather than turning into ash, the vaporization process causes the herb to turn dehydrated and brown.
Vaporizers are made up of parts: The cartridge/tank/heating chamber, atomizer, and battery. Depending on the type of vaporizer you have, some parts are named differently.
A tank is a refillable vessel for concentrates or oil. A cartridge is a pre-filled vessel of cannabis oil. A heating chamber is an open chamber in a dry herb vape to pack in ground weed. The vape's atomizer is the heating element that interacts with the tank, heating the oil into vapor to be inhaled. Lastly, the battery provides the device with power to be able to heat up its contents. The battery is important, because it’s in charge of being powerful enough to quickly heat up to the high temperatures necessary for vaping, so that’s why some vapers seek a high mAh (storage capacity) in their devices.
Portability & Discretion: When it comes to portability, vaporizers beat most methods by a longshot. Because they’re usually slim and only a few inches long, They can be easily slipped in the pocket. Whether you like puffs on-the-go, or you simply want a simple consumption solution for the home, a vape will likely be perfect for your needs. They are ideal if you need to be discreet, because the smell that comes with cannabis vapor is light, and quickly dissipates. Not only that, but they’re as easy as a press of a button and a quick pull, so you skip the trouble of lighting up!
Ease of Use: Because vaping requires minimal effort, it’s perfect for those who don’t want to complicate their consumption. Negating the trouble of attachments, torches, water, and other supplies makes for a streamlined user experience.
Dose Control: When you hit herb or concentrates from water pipes, it can be difficult to properly dose yourself and take a way bigger hit than intended. Using a vaporizer device, whether it’s for weed or wax, is much easier to control your doses with. It’s much more consistent in the way that if you keep the device on the same temperature and inhale for a certain length of time, you’re consuming the same amount every time. If you prefer to limit consumption or pace yourself, vaping can be an ideal option.
