6 Great Cooling Pipes to Kick Off Your Summer

Crown Jewel Glass Bong

 Crown Jewel Glass Bong

Show off a little bling to the squad this summer, and show them who’s the rising star with a hit from the Crown Jewel. This beveled gem-cut glass pipe is of unparalleled quality, with completely faceted surfaces of pristinely clear glass. But don't let its beauty fool you, this gorgeous bong hits as hard as the gnarliest pipes you’ve ever gotten your hands on. With room for 6 inches of ice above the pinch, this bong is heavyweight contender all year round.

Baby Blue Mini Bong

 Baby Blue Mini Bong

Value doesn’t have to sacrifice quality, and if you’re looking for a reliable pipe this season without the fuss, the Baby Blue Mini has exactly what you need. This is the best, lowest priced pipe you’re going to find. Featuring a diffused downstem, double chamber design with a ghost percolator and ice pinch, you’ve got a recipe for a smooth, cool hit from a pipe that could fit in your pocket if you needed it to. The oversized bowl piece makes this the perfect pipe to pass or just sit back and puff. Whether you’re shopping for a new piece on a budget, or hoping to pick up a spare pipe to take with you to parties, this is where your buck stops.

Iceberg Glass Spoon Pipe

Iceberg Glass Spoon Pipe

Need a cool, handheld hit? Chilling glass tech doesn’t stop at ice pinched bongs and freezable coil condensers. Hand pipes are easy to take with you and stow away when necessary, so it’s natural that you want one for the summer heat that can go toe to toe with the big coolers. The aptly named Iceberg pipe will cool the smoke of your pipe with a unique fritted glass lining that increases the surface area of the interior of the pipe tremendously for superior waterless heat exchange. With thick, heat-treated glass, the Iceberg lives up to its name when you refrigerate it before use, the robust rectangular profile holding in the chill to cool smoke before it leaves through the mouthpiece.

Mini Beaker Bong w/ Ice Pinch by Diamond Glass

Mini Beaker Bong w/ Ice Pinch by Diamond Glass

American made, quality brand name bongs don’t have to break the bank. This little pipe is well made and the quality is apparent as soon as you pick it up. But that’s what we’ve come to expect from a manufacturer like Diamond Glass. A tiny take a classic beaker bong, this little number features an oversized bowl, a diffused downstem and over 3 ½” of room for mini ice cubes in the mini neck. Perfect for at home or on the go, you’ll love how this small pipe pulls and smokes.

Downstem Perc, Beaker Style Sunburst Bong

Downstem Perc, Beaker Style Sunburst Bong

Celebrate summer with an homage to the sun itself. A gorgeous throwback to the classic American blown glass style, the Sunburst bong features a brilliant glass flare that doubles as a secure grip to keep the pipe from slipping out of your hand. It might not look like it, but this beauty can hold up to eight inches of ice above a signature helix-style ice pinch, that holds ice securely and without obstructing airflow, but without letting any ice fall down onto the downstem as it melts.

Freezer Burner Coil Condenser

 Freezer Burner Coil Condenser

Probably the ultimate heatwave pipe, the Freezer Burner Coil Condenser is built top to bottom to give you a cool high on hot days. The coils are filled with a freezable gel and detach so that they can easily be stored in a freezer when not in use. The condenser provides maximum cooling in the shortest possible space, with each coil exceeding 12 inches in stretched length. By forcing your smoke up through this tight coil, maximum heat transfer is achieved, providing even more thorough cooling than the standard ice pinch with none of the melting ice. Who says lighting up has to be an indoor activity? Show the sun who’s boss with the coolest rips on the planet.

The Daily Grind: Why Buy a Grinder?

Thursday, March 30, 2017 Comments (1)

By Doug Mackar

Grinder

It’s easy enough to break up herb with your fingers or even a pair of scissors, so why would you ever need a grinder? Like many things, it’s not so much a matter of need as it is once you’ve used one, you’ll wonder why you waited so long to start. A grinder is a simple machine, and like all good machines, they do tasks better and more efficiently with less effort. Fact is: grinders do what your fingers and your scissors do faster and more effectively. Your herb will be more consistently shaped which will make for a better, smoother and more pleasurable smoke. It will last longer, too. Doesn’t that sound good? Yeah, I know.

So now it’s just a matter of choosing the right grinder for you. The first thing to take into consideration is material. The three most common materials for grinders are wood, plastic (technically acrylic), and metal. Wood grinders look natural and classy. They are lightweight and when utilizing the design aspects we’ll discuss in a minute, they can work very well. Plastic grinders are usually the cheapest option, and we all know what comes from cheap options, right? They definitely would definitely be good to keep in a backpack to have on hiking trips, but for daily use around the house, it would be better to invest in a metal grinder. Metal grinders are the industry standard and by far the best built and best value for your money. Most have a magnetic upper section that makes grinding quick and easy. The rest of the sections screw together like lids on a jar.

Grinder

Three Tiers of Grinders

Two Piece, Single Chamber

The most basic grinder consists of only two pieces forming a single chamber. Like all other grinders, both the top and bottom pieces have teeth which work together to grind your herb. Diamond shaped teeth are one of the most popular designs because they can cut evenly in both directions and allow the herb to flow around them more efficiently. The more teeth the grinder has, the finer the grind will be. The disadvantage to a single chamber is that you have to get the herb out from between the teeth to get it out of the grinder, which can get to be a bit annoying when pieces of herb get stuck between the teeth.

Three Piece, Double Chamber

The next options is a three piece grinder which consists of two chambers. The top chamber is basically the same as a single chamber grinder, with teeth on both the top and bottom sections, but in addition to that, the bottom section also has holes in between the teeth, which the ground herb falls through when it reaches the appropriate size. An additional chamber below the upper section fills with the ground herb and can be easily retrieved by unscrewing just that section of the grinder.

Four Piece, Triple Chamber

A four part grinder is the one to buy. Here’s why: In addition to the functions stated above, a four part, three chamber grinder adds one important feature: a screen below the second chamber that allows kief to sift down into a third chamber. Most folks will let this kief build up over a long period of time, then use it to top bowls or joints. It is a great way to get that little extra out of your smoke, and it’s a great treat that otherwise would get burned up. Some grinders with this extra screen come with a small tool to make it easier to scrape the kief out of the lower chamber. These tools usually look like tiny plastic spatulas or mini guitar pics.

Grinder

There are more options that are available on some models of grinders. A lot of your decision making will come down to aesthetics once you decide on the size and material of the grinder you want. There are grinders that have handles on the top that you turn to grind the herb instead of twisting the lid. They are much like old fashioned pencil sharpeners (Do they still have those on classroom walls?). Other grinders have windows on them, either on the top so you can watch the grinding happen, or on the side so you can see how much herb or kief you have built up without having to open the grinder and potentially spill the contents.

Grinder

In the end, the point is, whether you buy the simplest, cheapest grinder, or the fanciest, most action-packed grinder on the market, you’re going to be glad you did it. Your joints and bowls will burn more evenly and you’ll get more out of your bag than if you just grind it by hand. Plus, the kief. Can’t complain about that. Check out these different grinder options and see which one you think is a good fit for you.

Silicone Galore!

Saturday, March 25, 2017 Comments (0)

By Ryker Hodge-Attili

We’re excited to be expanding our inventory of silicone pipes and accessories! From unbreakable silicone pipes, to sanitary silicone mouthpieces, to convenient non-stick silicone concentrate containers, we’re stocking everything silicone under the sun. Many people use silicone every day in their lives, but few know just how incredible of a material it is.

 Silicone Pipes

Among other things, it sure is squishy!

Silicone is something of a wonder material. Here’s a laundry list of its unique characteristics:

Low thermal conductivity

Silicone doesn’t conduct heat! It makes great oven mitts, able to reach safely into boiling water, not to mention light up a bowl

Low chemical reactivity

Silicone is almost entirely inert, making it safe to use in a wide variety of applications without contaminating food, surfaces, or other objects due to chemical interactions

Biodegradable

Surprisingly, silicone is highly biodegradable, and documented to have “no marked effect on organisms in the environment.” It’s an earth-friendly material!

Low toxicity

Silicone is non-toxic and safe for the body and the environment

silicon containers here

Silicone containers are clean, non-stick solutions to concentrate storage

Thermal stability

Maintaining its physical properties from -100C to 250C, silicone is very stable across a wide range of temperatures - certainly, any temperature you’d be using it at!

The ability to repel water and form watertight seals

Like glass, silicon repels water, making it slide right off its surface. Unlike glass, it creates great watertight seals. No more leaks!

Does not stick to many substrates, but adheres very well to others

Silicon is unique as a non-stick material, because while it repels most gunk and grime, it stick tightly to certain materials, such as glass. Silicon seals and glass containers are a match made in laboratory heaven

silicon containers

Keep your germs to yourself! Silicone mouthpieces are great for sharing pipes

Does not support microbiological growth

Worried about keeping your pipe clean, and your concentrate uncontaminated? Silicone doesn’t support the growth of bacteria, providing no nooks and crannies for it to gain a foothold

Environmental resistance

Resistant to oxygen and UV light, silicone stands firm against the ravages of time and exposure. Or rather, stands floppy!

Electrical properties

Perhaps not relevant to your smoking experience… but silicone is uniquely able to be formulate as either an electrical insulator or conductor, giving it a wide variety of applications in electronics

silicone rolling

No stick, no problem. Silicone rolling trays help you make sure no herb gets left behind

Due to all these remarkable properties of silicone, the production of silicone has become a 13.5 billion dollar market, not the least of which, in this day and age, is the demand for cost effective, hygienic, safe pipes and accessories. You want everything your herb comes in contact with to be clean, safe, and environmentally friendly. Silicone is all that and more! Take a look at our selection of silicone pipes and silicone accessories today.

Bubble or Nothing

By Doug Mackar

Bubbler

Sometimes you like that long, smooth, water-cooled hit from your 12” water pipe, and other times you enjoy a quick smoke from a simple hand pipe. But what do you do when you have that in-between feeling, when you just can’t decide which one of those options to go with, then what do you do? You pick up a bubbler and get the best of both worlds, that’s what you do.

  Bubbler

There is a fine line between a bubbler and a small dab rig or bong, just as there is a fine line between a bubbler and mid-sized spoon pipe. The main advantage of a hand pipe is its simplicity and portability. The main advantage of the bong is its system of water filtration and added percolation, both of which work to produce a smoother and cooler hit. The bubbler takes the best of both of these smoking tools and gives you an experience that neither of the other two could give you on their own.

Bubbler

In the simplest ideration, a bubbler is a hand pipe with a downstem that leads directly into a single, small chamber filled with water. Take away the water and the bubbler hits just like a normal pipe. Add the water and you’ve got yourself the smoothest hitting hand pipe you’ve ever smoked.

Some bubblers take the downstem system in their chambers a step further, adding diffusion and/or small percolation systems in addition to a simple water chamber. No matter what type of technology your bubbler utilizes, you really can’t go wrong. They are convenient, easy to clean and smoke like a dream. So if you are trying to decide between a hand pipe or a small bong, but neither seems like the right choice for you, a bubbler may be exactly what you’re looking for.

Smoking Culture and Glass Innovation

Saturday, March 18, 2017 Comments (0)

By Ryker Hodge-Attili

Recently I’ve written about what carb caps are, and how they work, discussing, in short, what a carb cap (named after the carburetors in cars, since they function essentially the same way) actually does, and why people use them.

carb caps

It got me thinking about the interaction between smoking culture and the glassmaking community, and how inextricably they feed off one another. On the surface, these circles would seem to have very little to do with one another. The vast majority of smokers can't blow or work glass, lacking either the knowledge, resources, or both. Conversely, the vast majority of glassworkers have little reason to interact with the smoking community, with most at-home lampworkers sticking to trinkets like beads and pendants, paperweights and miniature arts, and professional glassblowers typically spending their time making and selling sculpture, vases, and other larger, prestigious works.

A lampworker in his workshop

A lampworker in his workshop.

And yet, there are always ample glass pipes on the market for purchase. Cheap foreign factories can't wholly explain this, as there are always a plethora of homegrown American glassmakers, of scale large and small, producing pipes and accessories. The carb cap itself requires an intimate communication between the smoker and the glassmaker - the smoker has a particular need, for a specialized tool to restrict airflow in order to produce a low pressure environment, and the glassmaker not only provides this tool, but innovates upon it. Just Recently, among local smoking circles, special homemade "directional" caps have been making the rounds, which come equipped with a small handle, a curved bottom surface to keep a tight seal despite tilting the cap, and the carb hole itself. No doubt in due time, such caps will become available from mass producers, as the glass giants catch on to the trend and rush to capitalize on it.

nectar collector

Nectar collectors are another sterling example of this. As the creator of the Nectar Collector explains on their official website, "I was sitting at my desk, preparing to work on drawings for an unrelated project when it came to me in a flash. I drew what I had imagined and went into the studio and made one. Within the hour I was taking a hit from the world’s first Nectar Collector." The first dab straws were just scientific glass pipettes, but glass innovation stepped in to open up the market to smokers looking for a more friendly, less sterile experience than taking a hit from what is admittedly, literally lab equipment.

Wherever you turn, glass making and smoking culture walk closer in step than they appear to on the surface. I guess the question is when, not if, smokable glass sculpture becomes a reality. That'd make for quite an interactive museum experience.

What is a Nectar Collector?

Friday, March 10, 2017 Comments (0)

By Doug Mackar

Nectar Collector

A nectar collector is one of the latest innovations in the world of concentrate smoking. Think of it as the ultimate one hitter for dabs. A nectar collector consists of three main components: the tip, the body and the mouthpiece. The tip is made of glass, titanium or quartz, and is the only part of the collector that comes in direct contact with your concentrate. The tip is basically the nail of the nectar collector. The mouthpiece is simply a removable glass extension much like the end of a hand pipe or one hitter. The body of the collector is part pipe, part bubbler, part one hitter. Add a chamber with a perc or diffuser and you now have the krazy straw of dab pipes.

Nectar Collector

A straw is a common way to describe a nectar collector. You are essentially sucking up your dab hit like sucking water out of a bowl. Most nectar collectors come with a small glass dish to put your wax or oil in. This is what you’ll smoke out of. The advantage to this type of smoking, over say a dab rig, is that nectar collectors are extremely efficient. You only smoke what the tip comes in contact with, so there is little to no waste of your wax or oil. You can take the exact size hit you want without watching your stash go up in smoke while you’re exhaling. They are much more portable as well, which is another advantage over a larger rig.

Nectar Collector

Probably the biggest advantage to most discerning dabbers, though, is that without question a nectar collector is the best way to get the best taste out of your oils and wax. Once you try it, you’ll notice the difference right away. Not to say that these should completely replace your rig. There is definitely a place for both, but for personal smoking, or to get the most out of your high-end concentrates, a nectar collector is definitely worth having in your arsenal.

Here’s How it Works

1. Fill it with water

If your collector has a percolator or chamber in it, you’ll want to start by filling the chamber with water. This should be done before you put the other two pieces on. Most smokers and sellers recommend filling the chamber about halfway or just below halfway. Start there and then over time see what works best for you.

IMPORTANT : Fill your collector with water before putting it together. Having the mouthpiece off will make it easier to get the water in, but having the titanium/quartz/glass tip off is imperative so that water does not get trapped in the tip. Trapped water can cause cracking when it is heated up.

2. Put it together

The tip and the mouthpiece both go into the body of the collector in the same way. Push it in and turn it slightly as if you were tightening a lightbulb. This will make the two parts “catch” each other and remain in place. If it makes you more comfortable, there is a clip in some kits that attaches the tip to the body.

IMPORTANT : Make sure the tip is completely secure before you start to heat it up. You definitely don’t want it falling out while it’s heated to several hundred degrees or more. No matter where it landed, that would not be good.

3. Heat up the tip

Hold the collector horizontally and heat the tip with your favorite dab torch. Holding it horizontal keeps any oil or wax that is already built up in the tip from leaking out. You’ll want to try different levels of heat with different types of concentrates, so experiment a bit and see what works best for you. Excess heat may cause cracking of the glass joint over time, so take it easy. It does not need to be glowing red to work. Remember, you want to vaporize your concentrate, not burn it.

4. Smoke it

Several smokers have suggested beginning to draw air through the collector before you reach the oil in the dish. Touch the tip gently to the oil or wax in the dish and draw in the smoke. Keeping along the edges of the dish at first will be the most efficient way to keep the rest of your concentrate tasting good. If you smoke from the middle to start, you’ll potentially burn the edges of the rest of your oil or wax before you smoke it. Not a huge deal, just a friendly suggestion.

5. Let it cool: Dismantling/Cleaning

Let it cool before you try and take it apart. Carefully twist the tip and mouthpiece in the opposite direction you twisted it when you put it in and it should come right apart. If the tip or mouthpiece gets stuck, don’t force it. Submerge the entire piece in a bowl of hot water and let it sit for a minute. That should do the trick. A quick and easy way to empty the chamber of water is to hold it over the sink and blow through it.
