Bad news for lovers of the alternative medicine kratom: it’s been officially declared an opioid by the FDA commissioner Scott Gottlieb. In a lengthy statement released February 6th, Gottlieb made it clear that the FDA considers kratom to be a dangerous substance due to its opioid properties. Kratom’s mild opiate effects are in fact what draw people to the substance, so the FDA’s statement is at once a “thank you, Captain Obvious”, and one that’s meant to spread fear about a little-known substance.
